School of Visual Art (NYC)

Hi there anyone going to School of Visual Art cartooning or knows about it?

I've been accepted to SVA Cartooning course and Academy of Art Illustration but I'm still deciding whether it's good. I heard SVA is a pretty good school though.

Please let me know if SVA Cartooning allows manga and/or the kind of semi-realism fantasy painting (digital media) that I usually do. Because if SVA cartooning wants caricature and funny cartoons I might as well go to SVA illustration.
Thanks for the help!

If all's well I'm going to New York City :D !

I went to SVA and it was a very good school. But there should be someone there at SVA who can answer that question for you with more authority than anyone on DA can?

When I was there the cartooning and animation people were in regular classes with illustration students for the first year, to make sure they had solid drawing skills. They were expected to work at realism and get out of their usual style for those classes. Some of them were not very happy at that and wanted only to continue to perfect their already accustomed style. But this was not yesterday, if you know what I mean and I am only assuming drawing fundamentals are still stressed to the same level. Perhaps not. But i will guess that for your first year you will be forced out of your usual style. If that's still true it will be better for you in the long run (even though you may hate it at first) since fads come and go, and if tastes of consumers change you will not be stuck with a passed style and will be able to adapt more easily to various jobs.

When I was there it was a kick-ass school with genuine respect for many types of art, and whatever your genre or goals if a student had talent it seemed to be recognized. But you will work your ass off, no kidding.

So maybe call there and try to talk to some admissions counselor. There are people paid to answer this type of question and SVA costs a damn lot of money!!! They can work a little and answer a question before you spend that much cash!
I dropped out because of being WAAY too poor to finish - in case you wondered why I am not rich and famous XD But I am glad I tried to stay as long as I could. (only 2 years)
Good Luck.
And check out Galaxy Army-Navy store for cool stuff while you are there.

I've never gone to SVA, but I live in NYC and I've heard a lot about it and known people who've gone there. it's a great school from what I hear, and rather prestigious. Definitely go! :w00t:

I have friends who graduated from SVA Illustration, who loved the school for what is, a very good art college. However wouldn't you have to ask yourself what field you prefer to go into afterwards? I would think that cartooning would help you in the film industry more, while illustration might give you "concept artist" jobs... too bad you could take both.

My advice is to contact the Admissions Office and have a long talk with an advisor who knows about both programs. I use to give tours to high school kids wanting to attend my college, it gave them a little insight to what to expect.

However if you can't do that in advance, I would write out any and all questions you have, and see if someone can give you an hour of their time.

Good luck, yer very talented! Enjoy it!

Thanks for the advice~

I'm actually thinking of becoming a manga artist and do freelance book illustration as a 2nd job.
Just worried if I have to do a fixed style or medium, since the high school teachers didnt bother with what I do at all.

And yeah also, about cartooning... they usually do tradition art. But with skills like yours they are always those who slip by with digital media. So don't worry you'll do great!
